INTRODUCTION

CONGRATULATIONS, YOUR BOOK IS PUBLISHED!

We are very happy to inform you that your book is now officially published and will be uploaded to our web site within the next few days. As a published author, you now have something in common with Dickens, Woolf, Kipling, Cummings, and Lawrence.

That's how Michelle of Infinity Publishing informed me that Book Marketing from A-Z is now published. Can you imagine any other e-mail that is more welcoming than that to an author??

Reviewers who have already received copies are raving even before they review the book. Subscriber Shirley Roe, managing editor of AllBooksReview, http://www.allbooksreviews.com, wrote in an email - “Just holding it in my hand, I know you will sell thousands and thousands of copies.” As they say - From her mouth to God's ears.

For the benefit of new subscribers, the book's 325 contributors are paid subscribers. Their best (and sometimes worst) marketing strategies are in alphabetical order for ease of use - A for Advertising (pros and cons) through Z for Zero Promotion (when the book sells itself). The 400-page, 5.5” x 8.5” soft-cover book sells for $18.95. Subscribers to this newsletter who wish to purchase a copy are entitled to a discount. Below are the instructions to follow:

Contact: Michelle Shane, toll-free at 877-BUY-BOOK, and reference Product code: SUB2431-2 for a 20% discount. Should you wish to recommend the book to others, please direct them to http://www.buybooksontheweb.com. Click “Marketing” and scroll down.

1) WONDERFUL WEBSITES

Subscribers have often sent me websites that they find helpful. Here are a few:

“An excellent site for anything whatsoever to do with writing is http://midwestbookreview.com,” says Joyce Hale, a self-published author of several books of poems. “One can find almost anything there, plus send in their books for review at no cost. I have had three books reviewed by their reviewers.” http://legacy.bluesky40.com

---------

Bernadette Dyer, whose latest book is WALTZES I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN (Women's Press 2004) recommends Places For Writers, http://www.placesforwriters.com. “It is wonderful,” she says, and “has so many calls for submissions posted.”

-----------

Science fiction, fantasy, horror and humor author William Rieser touts http://carolkluz.com “for authors who need to know how to succeed. Carol's is the best website I have ever seen for struggling writers.” http://rieserbooks.homestead.com/rieserbooks.html.

-----------

Thomas Neviaser, a retired orthopedic surgeon and author of MAN'S UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE USE OF HIS GARAGE (BookSurge Publishing 2003) and THE COMB IN THE URINAL AND OTHER PERPLEXITIES OF LIFE (Pecos Publishing 2004), likes to join other “publication type sites where the book could be reviewed or be visualized such as http://www.authorsden.com, http://www.justbookz.com, http://www.bookideas.com, http://thebooxreview.com and http://booksandauthors.net.”

------------------------

“The three essential components I KNEW I was going to need to start the whole process of writing a book were, an agent, a stunning book proposal and a informative visual website to spread the word,” says John Holland, author of three books published by Hay House Publishing: BORN KNOWING (2003), PSYCHIC NAVIGATOR (2004) AND 101 WAYS TO JUMP START YOUR INTUITION (June 2005).

“I immediately contacted a colleague who has over 25 years experience in marketing and design. He had just started his own business specifically aimed at authors, musicians and artists to help them with branding, marketing and design. His website is http://www.imageshaper.biz His site gives some great tips on writing winning book proposals, designing user-centric websites and how to start working with the media and so much more.” http://www.JohnHolland.com

-------------------------

And, from yours truly - The website of Publishers Marketing Association - http://www.pma-online.org. If you're looking for an independent publisher, click “Member Directories” on the left and then “PMA Membership Directory” and you'll find an alphabetical list of hundreds and hundreds of contact names, e-mail addresses, websites, and in many cases the types of books published, of small publishing companies.

2) FEEDBACK

Headers and Footers

Rose Beavers runs a small self-publishing author/publishing company and was experiencing problems putting headers and footers in a book, without them appearing on the chapter pages of the novel.

Assuming that she is using Microsoft Word, many subscribers responded that they too have had problems formatting their books with Word and the best way to prevent this is to place each chapter in a separate section.

“I've had this problem when formatting my book in Word,” says Ron Peters, author of two Dun Wheeling detective/romance novels, SOS (Virtualbookworm.com 2002) and NIGHT BEFORE AUGUST (Pagefree Publishing 2004).

“You have to create a 'new section' where you want the headers to appear, create another new section where you don't want them to show, and then a new section where they start up again. Otherwise, when you insert headers and footers it goes on throughout the book ad nauseum.

”I'm sure this also applies if she's using some other program.” http://www.ronpeters.net.

---------------------

“Right before each chapter, she needs to insert a break so that Word knows that each chapter is a different section,” adds Sigrid Macdonald, author of GETTING HIP: RECOVERY FROM A TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT (AuthorHouse 2004).

“Once she does that, she can hit the menu Insert, Page Headers. There's a little box there that she needs to uncheck that says 'Show numbers on first page. If she un-checks that on ALL of her chapters, and makes sure to section off each chapter beforehand, she'll be fine.

“If she has any more questions, she can join the Lulu forum and ask anyone there. It doesn't matter whether or not she plans to publish with Lulu.” http://www.sigridsrecovery.blogspot.com

--------------------

Another alternative, offered by Wilburta Arrowood, author of FOR THE LOVE OF A CHILD (Publishing Designs 2004, is to go through the on-line tutorial on headers and footers, which includes numbering. It is too convoluted for me to try to explain here, but the tutorial does a good job of dealing with the issue. Allow about 45 min. to an hour to work through it all, but it is time well spent.” http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RC010216611033 http://www.wilburtaarrowood.com

-----------------

Finally, most subscribers suggest using a software problem designed for book layouts.

“For the kind of layout she wants, especially if she intends to publish a number of books, she would do better to learn one of the desktop publishing systems, like Quark or InDesign--or hire someone to do the layout for her,” says Elizabeth Burton, Executive Editor of Zumaya Publications. “I believe most of the subsidy presses will provide that service for an additional fee.” http://www.zumayapublications.com

-------------

Dar Hosta uses Adobe InDesign to format her books and electronic newsletter. “With InDesign, I am able to shut off a 'master' format wherever need be without affecting the rest of the document.” She recommends checking out books by Visual Quickproject at Peach Pit Press. “I found their InDesign book to be quite helpful.”

Dar recommends finding a user group on the Internet. “When I am stumped, I look for the appropriate user group and post my question clearly to the group,” she says. “I have always been able to find someone who knows what to do…All of the Adobe products have terrific user groups…use Google to get to the group who can help you with your software.” Dar is a publisher, illustrator and author of two award-winning children's books, I LOVE THE NIGHT (Brown Dog Books 2003) and I LOVE THE ALPHABET (Brown Dog Books 2004). http://www.darsart.com

-------- Bookmarks

My question about bookmarks brought an avalanche of responses, for which I am eternally grateful.

Some subscribers recommended doing the bookmarks myself, going to Kinkos, or using a software package. As I wrote these subscribers, I have not had much luck with doing my own printing and would much prefer having the bookmarks made by a professional.

“Microsoft Publisher is a software package that makes creating cards, brochures, newsletters (the printed kind), postcards, letterheads, invoices, etc. much easier to do,” says T. L. Cooper (see Subscriber Seminar). “It provides templates that work beautifully.”

Linda Pynaker even e-mailed me an attachment of a template of the Word document she developed to create her bookmarks. Linda is a motivational speaker and author of MAKE IT HAPPEN! USE YOUR INTUITION AND POSITIVE SPIRALS (Linda Pynaker 2004) and TIME TO HEAL (Infinity Publishing 2003). http://www.lindapynaker.com

--------------

“I highly recommend http://www.printingforless.com,” says Julie Clark Robinson, author of LIVE IN THE MOMENT (Beyond Words Publishing 2004). “Great job, great price! My suggestion, count how many they send you, my shipment was short by a few hundred, but they gladly reprint extras and send them to me, for free!”

--------------

Peter Bowerman writes that he just had some 4-color business cards made at http://www.TwigOneStop.com, which also does bookmarks. “Good service, great pricing, though I was hoping for something a little heftier (paper-wise),” he says. “I'd ask for a sample first to make sure you know what you're getting.” Peter is author of THE WELL-FED WRITER (Fanove Publishing 2000). http://www.wellfedwriter.com

-----------------------

Two subscribers recommend http://www.web-cards.com “I have had bookmarks made for my picture books,” says children's book author, Nancy Kelly Allen, author of ONE THE BANKS OF THE AMAZON (Raven Tree Press 2004) and ONCE UPON A DIME (Charlesbridge Publishing 1999). “The price is reasonable and the cards are beautiful.” Young adult novelist Lara Zeises agrees that it's the “best place” for bookmarks. “They usually have deals for first-time buyers,” she says. “Get the smaller ones and only have the text put on one side.”

--------------

Both Wilburta Arrowood and Brenda Novak recommend http://www.earthlycharms.com.

“I know several people who have used Earthly Charms and have been pleased,” says Wilburta, adding that it “would probably be the most economical for four color work…My husband is a printer and he can't match their prices!” http://www.wilburtaarrowood.com

“You really should try Su Kopil at www.earthlycharms.com,” says Brenda. “She's very inexpensive -- but better yet, she's very good. I use her all the time.” Also, Su is donating her services to Brenda's silent auction in May 2005 to benefit juvenile diabetes. “Authors bid on getting a bookmark designed [by Sue] to promote their own work.” (The list of donors is available on Brenda's website). Brenda's latest book is A HOME OF HER OWN (2004), the fourth in the Dundee, Idaho series for Harlequin's Superromance line. http://www.brendanovak.com

--------------------------------------------------------------

From “Author's Advocate” Patrika Vaughn - “We and our book clients have been very happy with bookmarks produced for us by Color Tech (Richard). Contact him at 941-756-4582 or 941-753-6986, or colortech@prodigy.net http://www.acappela.com

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Cynthia Brian and Dar Hosta both recommend http://www.psprint.com. “Full color, very inexpensive, easy to work with,” says Cynthia, a TV/radio host and co-author of CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE GARDENER'S SOUL (HCI 2001), and author of BE THE STAR YOU ARE! (Ten Speed Press 2001), THE BUSINESS OF SHOW BUSINESS (Starstyle Productions, 13th ed 2002), and MIRACLE MOMENTS (West Coast Publishing 1996; Starstyle Productions 2004). http://www.star-style.com. “I've used them for numerous things, including my radio show postcards (500 for about $85) and all is done on-line,” says Cynthia. “Look no further than http://www.psprint.com,” advises Dar. (See Dar above under Headers and Footers). “I have just discovered this company and have sent several jobs to them already, including bookmarks…. You can get 2,000 color one-sided bookmarks for $140, which is an Internet bargain.”

--------------

Toni Leland, Executive Editor at New Concord Press, finds the “best deal on bookmarks” to be http://www.onlineprinthouse.com “Quality full color bookmarks, 2-day turnaround, and cheap! 5-cents each,” she says. “I use the company all the time and they're excellent.” http://www.newconcordpress.com

----------------

Hetty Gray makes her own bookmarks now. Before she did, she used http://www.designsbystrawberry.com. “Ask for Lisa,” says Hetty, author of NET PROPHET - THE BILL GARRETT STORY (2001) and THE BROWN PAPER BAG (2002), both published by Sugar Creek Publishing. “She's located just south of Chicago and does a great job.” http://www.sugarcreekpublishing.com

-------------------------------------------------

“The guy who does my stationery did them for me,” says Dotsie Bregel, executive founder of http:// www.boomerwomenspeak.com. “All I did was supply him with my art work and he ran off several on a page, side by side. He laminated them and cut them. It was so inexpensive. I saved a fortune compared to what I was going to pay to have official bookmarks done by a bookmark making company. His name is Mike Martin at Printing Images.”http://www.printingimages.com

===========================================================

The issue before last focused on blogs. Shel Horowitz has written about his experience, entitled “Start and Promote Your Own Blog Without Making Yourself Crazy”

“I'd been resisting blogging for a long time, even though I knew it would be good for my business,” he says. “I had this idea that nobody would take the blog seriously unless I posted every day.

“But in December, I decided that was just plain silly. I set up my blog in about two minutes, at blogger.com. The site has nice touches such as a bio profile that stays with every entry, and I could choose a background color that matched my website. Plus, there's the option to accept Google advertising and create a revenue stream. Oh yes, and the price is right--zero.

“And I'm only posting once or twice a week, and nobody's complaining. Recently, an editor was discussing a possible assignment with me, and when she broached the topic, I said, "Oh, I blogged about that"--and gave her the URL: http://principledprofit.blogspot.com. Needless to say, it pushed the dialog to a better level.

“It also gives me a forum for things that don't fit the format of my newsletters (or can't hold for the next monthly issue), and aren't necessarily appropriate for topic-focused online discussion groups--like the one I just put up about Google's new linking policy and its very severe intellectual property (Title of that post: "Google Joins the Let-Me-Hijack-Your-Webpage Crowd")

“And in my case, because I'm thinking about starting a new career as a political and social commentator and/or talkshow host, it will help establish a track record of opinion delivery far more substantial than the occasional letter to the editor--and brand the "Principled Profit/Good Business" combination. If I decide to pursue either or both of these directions, the blog will be a key weapon.

“So...advice for budding bloggers:

* If you've got new content at least once a week, that should be OK
* Blog about things that interest you, but also have implications for your key audience
* Promote your blog. Mine is in my e-mail sig. I've also sometimes commented on issues that arise in various online discussion groups, and then written a response suggesting people
* Keep a file with your blog entries. In my case, I'm putting up a kind of reverse-mirror page on my own website, which will have my blog entries from oldest to newest, and a hyperlinked table of contents so people can find any article easily. This way, I'm protected if for some reason, Blogger goes down or changes its service to make it undesirable, or starts rolling old posts out of the archives. I will probably mine my blog for future books and articles, just as I've done with my various e-zines.
* Very important: Before you hit "post," copy it into a program with a spell-checker, correct the typos, and read to through one more time.

-------------------------

Shirley Cheng, who is blind and disabled, had asked for suggestions on ways to promote her book off-line. However, she can't travel easily in a wheelchair and wondered how fellow disabled authors go about promoting their books. http://www.shirleycheng.com

-------

“Like Shirley Cheng, I am vision impaired and do not drive,” responds Laurel Johnson. “This compounds the situation listed above in that someone must take me to any publicity appearance. Most of my book sales have come from networking via computer or word of mouth.”

----------

Live Internet interviews are a great way for authors or publishers to promote their novels,” says Pamela Faye, responding to Shirley Cheng's question. “As in book reviews, an author or publisher reaches millions of avid readers.

“LBP Enterprises http://www.lbp-enterprises.com Lauretta Black Pierce is the Publicist for the radio show host Maxine Thompson - ArtistFirst http://www.artistfirst.com and Voice of America http://www.voiceamerica.com. Contact LBP Enterprises and ask Lauretta about these radio interviews. lbpenterprises@yahoo.com

For radio interviews: Do not go 'live to air' without preparation of what you might reply, to any given question. Radio announcers have a sneaky habit of asking curly questions. An example of one question recently asked of this marketing director from Australia, was, 'I heard there were more kangaroos in Aus than people -- is this true?'

“Jumpin' Jackrabbits! I hadn't counted them bounding in the hundreds of thousands across the Outback -- but there was a distinct possibility!” http://www.pamelafaye.biz

[Editor's Note - I was on the Artist First show Monday night for one hour discussing the newsletter and Book Marketing from A-Z. Host Maxine Thompson had a copy of the book and recognized many of the authors who have been on her show. She also invited me on her Maxine Show and Voice of America show later this month. Both Maxine and Lauretta are dreams - true professionals with heart. The next tele-seminar is the Maxine show, http://www.maxineshow.com, Tuesday, March 22, at 4 p.m., Pacific Time and 7 p.m., Eastern Time.]

-----------------

Following are two responses to Arlene Uslander's question about whether on-line reviews bring results:

Pamela Faye, the Arts Editor for Rolling Seas Promotions, says that “after an author's and publisher's novel has been reviewed by either Felicity Baker, Daniel Stapleton or Dakota Wind,” they are sent to her to be copy edited for a press release before then being sent to media outlets around the world through Press World UK - PRweb America - PressBox UK - PR.com - I-Newswire.com - Press Release Center - PR Leap, along with Yahoo - Googly newswire outlets.

Reporters then pick up these arts stories fashioned around the book reviews, says Pamela.

“Times are changing. Modern technology is now sweeping up the publishing industry like a storm. The Internet reaches far more consumers around the world, than any distribution of one newspaper can. When an arts story is scooped up by on-line reporters and runs to print in their newspaper, then you are spreading promotion from book reviews as wind-blown leaves sailing from trees in a tempest.

“Do the on-line book reviews really promote books? Without a shadow of doubt, if a reviewer excels at the art.” http://www.rollingseas.com.au pamela@rollingseas.com.au

------------------

“Such reviews have helped me in various ways,” says Laurel Johnson, author and reviewer. “My reviews of other author's books -- in my opinion -- have limited impact depending on where the reviews are placed.

"Since I review for three or four different groups, sometimes a review that gets lost in the shuffle at the information dense Midwest Book Review will gain attention at another, more specialized site.”

Laurel's latest book, co-authored with Stephen R. Silk, is COLOR OF LAUGHTER COLOR OF TEARS (Winterwolf Publishing 2004). http://mockingbird.creighton/edu/ncw/ljohnson.htm

--------------

Shirley Cheng also wanted to know if http://www.BookExhibits.com is real or a scam. “I would tell her to check out Combined Book Exhibit first, http://www.combinedbook.com,” says Celise Downs. “I'm planning on going thru them to show my books at the BEA in NYC in June. They work like Book Exhibits, but they're more well-known. From the research I've done on them, they attend this event every year, have a huge booth, and command primo space for maximum traffic.

“For the Expo, she'll have to register at the site itself (http://www.bookexpo.com) and there's a link to click on about CBE, but if she wants to showcase her books at other conventions, she can just go to the CBE website and join as a member ($95/yr).”

Celise's most recent books are SECRETS AND KISSES (2004), DANCE JAM PRODUCTIONS (2004) and DRAVEN ATREIDES TEENAGE FBI: A TOUCH OF ESSENCE (2005), all published by Gemini Mojo Press. http://GeminiMojoPress.com.

3) GRIST FOR YOUR MILL

Cynthia Brian is collecting stories for a new relationship book called "You Make the Money, I'll Make the Meaning! - How to Beat Burnout for Balanced Courageous Couples".

This book will explore the financial goals, values, and ideas in a relationship while balancing the importance of creating a nurturing home and making a difference in the lives of others.

Cynthia asks "In a healthy relationship, do both couples need to be earning at the same level all the time in order to be equal partners? Are achievement, status, and happiness based only on the monetary revenue we bring into the partnership? When do you have enough? How important is a life of meaning and giving back to our children, the community, the world?"

Cynthia is seeking stories 600-800 words from couples of any gender and any age, whether married or living together who are or have struggled with the issues of balancing money and meaning. Chosen stories will receive full credit, bio, by-line, and a complimentary book. Please send your contributions in a WORD document with a 50 word bio to cynthia@star-style.com
